Come ogni storia che si rispetti bisogna cominciare dall’inizio… la prima volta che ho visto un quilt è stato nel Michigan nel 2007. Mi trovavo lì per motivi familiari con marito e figlio di 4 anni. Vivevamo in un b&b e feci amicizia con Val, la proprietaria, una frizzante signora americana dai capelli rossi. Un giorno, in casa, vidi una rivista con le foto e il pattern di un quilt: Amish mosaic. Rimasi estasiata dai colori e dalla forma geometrica e dissi: Voglio farlo! Il giorno dopo Val mi portò da Jo Ann Fabric, un negozio in cui trovare qualsiasi cosa riguardi un hobby. Val cominciò a muoversi fra gli scaffali e a riempire il carrello dicendo: “You need this…this…this… ” Ti serve questo….questo… questo….e infilò tutto il kit base per fare patchwork, dalla rotella al piano di taglio, stecche di vari tipi, spilli, spille da balia curve, matite e penne x segnare e un buon libro per imparare. Poi passammo alle stoffe e anche lì scelse tutto lei mentre io la seguivo un po’ confusa. Comprai anche un kit con delle stoffe di Cars per fare un quilt a mio figlio. Arrivate a casa aprì un baule e mi diede alcune stoffe sue: “per il retro” disse. Annuivo e ringraziavo anche se mi chiedevo di che retro stesse parlando. Dopodiché mise tutto in una busta che finì in valigia e tornò in Italia con me. Feci la coperta per mio figlio, e iniziai quel quilt, ma poi rimase tutto nel cassetto per qualche anno. Nel 2008 nacque mia figlia e di tempo libero per cucire non ne avevo proprio. Ma il tempo passa e le passioni restano, così qualche anno dopo finii quello che avevo iniziato. Totalmente autodidatta, con le istruzioni sotto mano feci il mio quilt, con errori e difetti. Inutile dire che è uno dei quilt a cui sono più affezionata e ora fa bella mostra di sé nell’ ingresso di casa mia.

Every story start from the beginning. The very first time I saw a quilt was in Michigan on 2007. I was there with husband and my 4 years young son. We were lodging in a B&B where I met Val, the owner, a volcanic American lady with red hair. On that day, looking at some magazine I saw the pictures of this pattern, the Amish Mosaic. I remained entranced by colors and its geometric shape and I said: I want to do it! How do they do it ? Next day Val took me to Jo Ann Fabric. Val start to move within the shelves filling the chart saying: “You need this…..this…..this…… ” and prepared all the necessary for patchwork, from rotary cutter to cutting mat, rulers, needles, pencil and a good book. She then move to the fabrics and with same behavior selected the right one while I was following a little confused. I bought a kit with Cars characters to make a quilt to my son. Once back to the B&B, Val gave me some other fabrics: “it’s for the back !” she says while I just say yes and thank you thinkin at which “back” she was referring to. She gave me the magazine and put everything in an big envelope that comes back in Italy with me at the end of our journey. I made the Cars blanket for my son, and I start that quilt too, but then all remained seat in a drawer for some years. In 2008 my daughter was born and time for patchworks ended. Time passes but passions remain so, some years later, finally I finish what I started. Totally self-taught with just few instructions I did it, with errors and defects but it is one of my favorite quilt and proudly stand in my house entrance!
